Rainbow Elementary
|
Five members from Hagerty Robotics travel to Rainbow Elementary every month to lead their new after-school robotics club. We design hour long lessons centered around aspects of building a robot and provide fun activities for the kids to learn more about robotics. So far, our lessons have focused on programming and robot design.

Jackson Heights Middle School STEM Night
Hagerty Robotics members went to Jackson Heights Middle School to represent our school at their annual STEM day. We showcased the Modeling and Simulation program of emphasis at Hagerty as well as our robotics teams. We brought a variety of student project including a hydrogen powered RC car, 3D printed models, and a navigation app for our school. We also had both of our FTC teams demo their robots while talking about FIRST competitions.

Mini Maker Faire
|
The Mini Maker Faire at Barnes and Noble was a two-day event where members of our teams demonstrated our FTC robots in the hopes of encouraging shoppers to support our teams by buying from the store. We also got the chance to demonstrate some of the emerging tech toys for sale at Barnes & Noble. This event helped us raise money for our team as well as spread the word about FIRST.

STEM EXPO
To spread the word about Hagerty Robotics, we brought an old FTC robot, our current VEX robot, and two EV3 robots to demonstrate at a booth at the Oviedo Mall STEM Expo. We programmed simple sensing activities on the fly for the EV3 robots, and used our FTC and VEX robots to explain what our competitions entail. We also displayed the current FTC video on a laptop for people to watch. People from our team answered questions for anyone who was interested in FIRST or asked how the robots worked. We were even asked to represent the entirety of the STEM Expo by setting up a table in the hallway!

Fall Car Wash Fundraiser
|
Members of Hagerty Robotics worked in shifts at a local 7-11 to wash cars and raise money for our club. Instead of charging a flat rate for a wash, we decided that letting the drivers decide the price would allow us the greatest profit. Throughout the event, we also had sign-holders by the road to help advertise our carwash, and we positioned an outreach table by the front of the 7-11 to educate people about our club and ask for donations by the door of the store. This event was very successful; we raised $715. We are planning on holding another car wash fundraiser in the spring.

HHS Homecoming Parade
Hagerty’s homecoming theme this year was Hollywood, so we chose to create a Wall-E themed float. We used recycled cardboard boxes to create Wall-E and Eva, and built and decorated our float to resemble the future Earth and spaceship from the movie. Members of our team walked with the float down Lockwood Boulevard, yelling our team chants and high-fiving spectators. It was a great opportunity to promote the robotics program at HHS.

2016 Summer Camp
|
Our leadership team planned and held a three-day summer camp for anyone interested in the club. On the first day we taught the participants everything there is to know about FTC, team fundamentals, and the basic design process. The next day, our focus was on CAD and beginning to build mini competition robots. On the third day, the focus for the first half was programming, and during the second half we held the final competition - an original mini game that combined elements from Cascade Effect (2014-15) and Res-Q (2015-16).
